Bank holidays are the perfect opportunity to take a short break with your family and replenish your stock of together time between proper family holidays. The easiest and most obvious option is to stay in the UK, where there's a huge choice of family-friendly accommodation and attractions, whether you opt for a forest or seaside break or prefer the bright lights and noise (but queues) of a themepark, or of a big city. But there are plenty of other things to do – city/short breaks to European destinations or even further afield, mini cruises to the Continent or weekend activity breaks are all well worth investigating.

Consider destinations that won't be crowded with other families – Kent or Northumberland instead of Norfolk or Cornwall, for instance. And book well ahead to snag the best properties, possibly at lower prices.
If heading abroad and hoping for a low-cost flight, book well in advance - as early as you can.
Avoid paying premium prices at hotels by renting a cottage - self-catering also means you can avoid overly busy restaurants and have the facilities to make your own picnics to take on days out.
Avoid the obvious attractions – theme-parks, for instance – for low-key days out where you won't have to queue or fight for space.
