Easter family holidays

Easter is an excellent time for family holidays – unlike half term, it’s long enough to warrant a long-haul trip and a bit of jet-lag on the promise of a proper blast of early-spring sunshine to blast away your winter blues. This means that the world really is your oyster. Whether you stay near or of far, prices and availability do generally reflect the popularity of this time of year among families, but you certainly won’t encounter the peak prices – or the crowds – of high summer, so it’s worth thinking of making Easter your main holiday of the year. Do remember to check out in advance what vaccinations you may need and to book them in advance.

Tips

If avoiding long flights or very hot weather with young kids, look at Malta, Morocco, Tunisia, a Canary Island such as Tenerife, Egypt, Cyprus or Turkey. Warmer spots with older kids include Oman and Dubai, and further afield Kenya, India and Thailand. The latter have low accommodation and eating costs to balance out flight prices. In some farther-flung or less familiar locations, think about an escorted adventure holiday.

Rent a cottage, villa or apartment, at home or abroad, for freedom and flexibility – whether in windswept Suffolk, on the Algarve or on a Greek island such as Crete, or across the Atlantic in Orlando or on a Caribbean island such as St Lucia.

Don’t forget that Easter is a good time for a skiing holiday – resorts are cheaper and less crowded than at Christmas or February half-term, although you’ll need to go higher to be snowsure.

Or don’t go away at all – there’s so much happening in the UK, and so much chocolate to plough through! Many UK hotels and resorts, including Center Parcs and Bluestone, run their own Easter activities, or seek out a local National Trust property hosting egg hunts, trails and other seasonal family events.

If you can’t make it away for a ‘proper’ holiday, think about a city break – maybe taking in a top family show in London. Another home-based option is a break at one a UK themepark, most of which will have just reopened for Easter, usually with two or three new attractions.
