A great, relaxed option for family ski holidays, chalet-hotels can be essentially a larger version of a traditional catered chalet or basically small hotels with a homely, sociable atmosphere, a bar and lounge, and English-speaking staff. Food (and sometimes wine) is included in the package, and at the most family-friendly ones there’s in-house childcare.
As with all skiing accommodation, check how far it a given chalet-hotel is from cable-car/slopes/ski school.
If you’re looking for spacious bedrooms, find a chalet-hotel that was originally built as a hotel, not as a chalet.
If it matters to you, find out if the bar is limited to residents-only; some may be public.
For an added dimension to your holiday, find a chalet-hotel with a swimming pool and wellness facilities such as a sauna to warm you up after the slopes.
Look out for chalet-hotels that offer you the choice between dining at your own table or sharing a large communal table – part of the appeal of this type of accommodation is taking part in large sociable meals, but you may not want to do it all the time.
Ask about childcare qualifications – the best operators use well-qualified, experienced British nannies – and find out if the hours offered by a crèche suit your skiing plans.
