Accommodation options divide basically into hotels/resorts and self-catering choices. Both have their benefits for families – hotels and resorts generally offer a range of facilities, from restaurants and swimming pools to childcare in the form of kids' clubs for different age groups, while villas, cottages and apartments give you greater flexibility, the chance to save money by eating in, and more space to spread out in. The downside of self-catering is that your children might not make holiday friends if the accommodation is stand-alone, but for those with younger children it can prove by far the best option (unless your idea of a holiday excludes any shopping and cooking, that is!).
There is, in any case, a third way, and one that is increasingly popular with families - 'apart-hotels' that offer self-catering units benefitting from hotel facilities such as a restaurant, a pool and a launderette.
These are a great way of meeting other families while maintaining some degree of independence and the ability to play it by ear according to your and your kids' moods.
