Travelling by train is, where it's feasible, more ecologically sound than driving and flying, and can also be fun – younger kids tend to love all things to do with trains even if they find it hard to sit still whilst aboard, while older ones can easily be entertained for the duration with some prior organisation. Overnight train journeys can be a big adventure too. But train fares both in the UK and on the Continent can be very expensive when compared with budget flights – advance booking and travelling off peak can help you to get a better deal, but it's best to retain some degree of flexibility when travelling with kids (make sure you have travel insurance to cover cancellations), so avoid the cheapest non-refundable tickets.
