Salcombe, Devon: My favourite family holiday

Lynette Lowthian's Favourite family holiday Salcombe Devon

My fave holiday is our annual extended-family exodus to Salcombe in Devon. For years my mum has rented a lovely Edwardian house overlooking the harbour for the week before Easter. In all that time, the family has kept on growing – there are now 18 of us, ranging from a soon-to-be-born to an 80-year-old. Mealtimes are chaotic and rather competitive, as all the families try to outdo each other and produce the top nosh!

My brother has a battered little boat to take us all across the estuary to the beautiful beaches on the other side (with ferry crossing costing £1 each way, it would work out at £40 every time we all went across!). There’s always someone who wants to play a round of cricket or create a sculpture in the sand. The ‘next generation’ love to watch us grown-ups behave like kids, squabbling over who built the best castle…
