Family Events: Liverpool City of Culture 2008

Tall Ships Race, July 18th-21st
More than 70 tall ships from around the globe arriving at Liverpools’ World Heritage listed Wellington and Albert docks will mark the start of four days of maritime themed fun, including shanty singing, performances and opportunities to clamber aboard the vessels. On the final day you can watch the ships begin their ‘parade of sail’ to Ireland, to begin their races to Norway and beyond.
The Art Of Doctor Who, until Jan 2009
Hop on a ferry across the Mersey to reach the Spaceport, home to a new exhibition to show how the iconic shows are created, featuring many of the actual props, costumes and monsters, including Daleks and Cybermen.
Brouhaha Carnival Procession/Imagine Carnival, Aug 2nd and 3rd
The culmination of a 4-year carnival program tracing Liverpool's role in the transatlantic slave trade includes a massive multicultural parade with colourfully costumed street performers and puppets.
Liverpool Children's Festival, Aug 10th
‘The Imaginary City’ is the theme of this free festival of performances and workshops taking over William Brown Street, St Georges Hall, St John's Gardens, The World Museum, The Walker Art Gallery and Central Library for the day – the city being Liverpool’s twin, ‘Roopville’, with unusual inhabitants, incredible creatures and animated statues.
Strictly Awesome, Sept 3rd-7th
Details of this new show by the companies behind the giant Sultan’s Elephant that mesmerised millions of people in London in 2006 are being kept secret, but it promises to be another large-scale piece of live outdoor theatre.
Halloween Lantern Carnival, Oct 31st
Sefton Park is the venue for the city’s annual Lantern Carnival, which this year will feature a kinetic lantern, the ‘Phoenix Rising’ water and fire festival, and more than 200 performers, pyrotechnicians and musicians.
