San Miguel Hotel, Ibiza, Ibiza
As far as locations go, the San Miguel is in a plum spot. Its hotel part is terraced into a wooded hillside, while the beach club section is set just below. But the real bonus is the gorgeous bay. It’s narrow but spectacular, with a sand-pebble beach at its centre. The sea is lovely, too – all turquoise shallows ideal for snorkelling and watersports like kayaking and windsurfing. And it’s all just steps away, so you and the kids can be there in moments. As if all this wasn’t enough, both the hotel and beach club roll out lots of attractions of their own. Take the pools. The beach club has its own lagoon-like number with palms and a whirlpool on the side. The hotel, meanwhile, features a rectangular pool with sun terraces and views over the beach below. What’s more, because the complex is a two-in-one affair, you get a double helping of sports and facilities. A gym, tennis, sauna and archery – they’re all here plus more besides. And that’s not counting the Thomson Familyclub specials and daytime activities. The evening entertainment deserve a special mention, too. Think lively quizzes and discos. For a family-oriented place, there’s a good line in restaurants as well. Head for the hotel’s eighth-floor buffet restaurant – its got huge windows with awesome views over the bay. Go for a Chinese or tapas meal. Or head for the Western Saloon. With its hot dogs, burgers and French fries, pint-sized guests can’t get enough of it. Another word about the location. The bay is quite secluded, tucked in the northern part of Ibiza. But you’re not really off the beaten track. There are restaurants and bars around and about – perfect for when you want to try somewhere new for a meal or drink. Plus, you’ll find shops scattered around, too, including a couple right by the beach.
