Embracing child-friendly apartments plus the Sheraton Algarve Hotel, the Pine Cliffs Resort near the touristy Algarve resort-city of Albufeira is a favourite for luxury family holidays and breaks in Portugal, with Premiership footballers among its clientele. It’s expensive on all counts, from most childcare (with a high staff: kids ratio) to the restaurants and shops, but there are well-priced supermarkets close-by for those self-catering. Guests can use all pools in the vast Pine Cliffs Resort, which is served by a little train. The beach – not ideal for toddlers – is a 25-minute walk (via a lift and steps) from the apartments.

Porto Pirata supervised children’s village (ages 6 months–8 years; extra charge for most activities; open Apr–Oct and some dates around Christmas; pre-booking recommended) with life-size wooden pirate ships, crazy golf, bouncy castle, games room and children’s pool.
