Although not generally associated with family breaks, you can have a wonderful break with kids in Amsterdam. It's compact and manageable. As with all cities it's home to hundred of thousands of kids, so there's plenty to do. It's a short flight from the UK and easily accessible once there. Be ready, however, to answer a lot of questions if you venture into certain parts of town. On the whole, thoroughly recommendable!
