Question Is it right to take a tiny baby away on holiday?

My first child had a passport when they were ten days old. The next day, we all flew to France. But is it right to take a tiny baby away? And if so, where and for how long? - Dea.

I think first time families may find this somewhat stressful! I don't think there is anything wrong with taking a small baby away, but the lack of a familiar support network may prove difficult for many? With older children already, it would be a good way to spend family bonding time. We see loads of small babies on flights these days, and in many ways it is easier than takinga toddler.

Default Babies and holidays

I took my first away at 4 weeks to the Shetland Islands and my second away at 6 weeks to the Alps. For me it seemed much easier when they were younger, I fed them myself and they slept in the carry cot. There was no other equipment really needed. We all had a great time, the only problem being is that they wont remember it!

i agree! especially if you are breastfeeding, travelling with infants seems a doddle compared with toddlers. you can even go out to dinner with them asleep in the car seat. ahh, those were the days...

now my oldest is 4, we can't be in the car for 10 miles without him piping up how 'far away' something seems. they become so much more demanding and hard to please.

We had a very successful holiday on a narrowboat when our friends baby was 10 weeks old.

As the boat was the holiday the baby just stayed on board all the time with all the changing stuff ready laid out.

Was very easy and relaxing for the new parents I recall.

We even used the threat of the small and noisy child to get a pub to bring lunch to us on the boat!

BTW, there is a minimum age to fly British Airways, though we're not sure that too many parents would be up for it at that early stage

British Airways say :

"A baby must be at least 48 hours old before we can accept him/her on to one of our flights, subject to having been born without any complications, due to the physical effects of flying at high-altitude."

I was born on holiday. (What a great line for a member of the Take the Family Team!) I was 8 weeks early, and the weight of 1.5 bags of sugar.

Sadly for me the destination was not Australia, America, Mauritius or the Virgin Isands, but I do have dual citizenship of sorts. My family were camping in West Wales, which means I have two birth certificates, one in English and a really long Welsh one. I stayed in hospital in Wales for 5 weeks, so had a much longer holiday than the rest of the family.

I've been back to Wales many many times, and always love the space, the people, and dont even mind rain that much!
