I thought Fenigan was a strong drug given to help children with sleep problems. However, I have leart recently that you can in fact buy it over the counter as friends have given it to their kids when flying long distances to ensure they sleep. Does anyone have experience of this?

I have used it on my 10 month old, he is now 6. I did a double dose on a flight to South Africa. He slept for about 8 hours. My advice is to wait until they are quite tired, or in a place where they are unable to run around - ie already in the aeroplane and give it then. On some children it can make them a bit hyper esp if they have the chance to run around. I would try it at home first and check the child sleeps - even try on an evening when putting him/her to bed. Other thing, you will be asked the age of the child when buying it over the counter - you need to say the child is over two. I hope that helps.

** DO NOT GIVE PHENERGAN TO CHILDREN UNDER TWO YEARS. This drug can depress respiration and HAS caused fatalities in children of that age range. Use caution for children over the age of two. It should NOT be used in conjunction with a variety of other medicines, eg, Antihistimines, as this can cause excessive sedation. Other drugs include ethanol, barbiturates, anti-anxiety medications, sedatives, other phenothiazines, and narcotic pain medications. PHENERGAN's generic name is Promethazine, and is used to prevent motion sickness, nausea or vomiting, and to treat itching associated with allergies or for sedation. SIDE EFFECTS: Dizziness can be one of the side effects, of which there are many, so please make yourselves aware of them. Ironically, promethazine, (Phenergan) sometimes stimulates rather than sedates patients, particularly children. Such stimulation may be manifest by restlessness, inability to sleep, heart palpitations or even seizures. ** PLEASE, PLEASE USE WITH CAUTION.
