When

This itinerary can be arranged at any time in the year. The climate in Mexico varies according to altitude; low-lying areas are hot – the Yucatán is at its coolest and least humidity in the busy period from Dec to Feb. In the Dec to April season, you might like to include an extension of your trip to Baja California – the Pacific coast peninsula – where you can go whale-watching and get up close and personal with these magnificent creatures.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival Mexico City
Day 2
Tour of the highlights of Mexico City. This dynamic city of 20 million inhabitants, founded on the site of Tenochtitlán, the Aztec capital, is dotted with magnificent churches and museums, and permeated by a vibrant, street-life. Take a tram ride or electronic scooter through the historic city centre. Visit the Anthropology museum, with great exhibits for children.
Day 3
Fly to the rugged hills of Chiapas and the colonial market town of San Cristóbal de las Casas.
Day 4
Explore the cobbled streets of San Cristóbal de las Casas. Optional excursions such as bike-riding are available.
Day 5 – 7
An adventurous three-day kayaking trip on the Lacantun river surrounded by bird-filled evergreen tropical forest. Hike along jungle trails to spot wildlife, visit native villages and scramble over ancient ruins.
Day 8
Travel by truck to Palenque. Explore this unique Mayan site with its towering palace and pyramid tomb.
Days 9
Travel to Yucatán’s colonial capital, Mérida and take a horse-drawn carriage though the city centre. Visit the magnificent Mayan ruins at Chichén Itzá and then head to the gentle turquoise waters and white powdery sand of Tulum, on Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
Day 10 –12
Explore Tulum’s ruined temples, and snorkel in the creeks and lagoons of the fish-filled natural aquarium at Xel-Ha.
Day 13
UK clients depart, arriving in the UK, day 14.
