Squeezed between Spain and France, the mountainous principality of Andorra is a good place for a relatively inexpensive but action-packed summer or winter family adventure holiday. And it’s also good-value for novice skiers.

Come for a summer family activity holiday, when you and the kids can experience the best of the region, including walking to the beautiful Siscaro Lakes and in the stunning Incles Valley. There’s plenty of scope for mountain-biking both in the Cortals Valley and downhill into Spain and the chance to get the adrenaline pumping as you shoot the rapids white-water rafting down world-class rivers near Sort. You can also get off the beaten track with a 4X4 excursion along old smugglers’ routes. The mountain scenery is fantastic, the climate perfect and the experiences thrilling.
In winter, arrange an independent skiing holiday or consider an escorted adventure holiday including a wide range of snow-based activities, such as snowmobiling, dog-sledding, snowshoeing, and downhill and cross-country skiing. You can also learn to make an igloo and avalanche rescue techniques, build snowmen or have the inevitable snowball fight.
If you are planning a family skiing holiday, you can enjoy 200km of varied piste in the GrandVilara, which connects the Soldeu-El Tarter ski area to Pas de la Casa.
Andorra has a wide range of accommodation to suit family holidays on varying budgets; with activity/adventure holidays, it will be included in the price. Heavy snowfall is almost guaranteed in winter, but this tiny principality is also blessed with regular sunshine, which means much of the time there are spectacular views of its steep mountains and plunging valleys against a backdrop of clear, blue sky.
Andorra is warm in summer and cold in winter, though temperatures vary considerably by altitude. In summer the average maximum temperature is about 24°C, cooling off to about 10°C in the evenings. As with all mountain regions, the weather can change quickly and you should be prepared for this.
Soldeu’s weather can be quite extreme due to its 2135m altitude; when it is sunny, temperatures go up into the 30s°C, but there are often afternoon thunderstorms with hail or heavy rain, bringing temperatures down to 10°C or below. However, it generally has a Mediterranean climate through the summer months, with plenty of sun.
The best option for those taking a family holiday in Andorra is to fly to Barcelona in Spain, which several airlines serve from UK airports. You can then transfer by coach in 3-4hrs (220 km). If you have time, a week in Andorra would fit well with a short break in Barcelona.
Andorran food is mainly Catalan Spanish, with some Italian influences – think pasta, meat and fish, including trout from mountain streams. Typical local dishes include escudelles (chicken, sausage and meatball stew), xai (roast lamb), trinxat (bacon with cabbage and potatoes), and cunillo (rabbit in a tomato sauce). Except in the main ski resorts in season, eating out is generally very good value.
Andorra is a relatively inexpensive family ski holiday option, although prices, as everywhere else, rise during the school holidays.
