Why

Although a Scandinavian country, Denmark feels much more like Mittel European. It lacks the remoteness of the rest of Scandinavia and is an enthusiastic member of the EU. Its social laws and atheistic attitude is definitely Scandinavian though. It is a delightful place to visit as a family. The Danes are charming and friendly, public transport is excellent, most people speak English and everything is laid on for you. There is something very quirky and individual about the Danes and their country, which quickly works something of a spell on you. It is, in many ways a living, breathing Hans Anderson story.

How

Fortunately it takes less than 2 hours to fly from London to Copenhagen, and flights are frequently available from many other UK airports, including Gatwick, Stanstead, London City, Birmingham, Manchester, Aberdeen and Newcastle, with some airlines offering alternative destinations of Billund and Aalborg. Airlines include British Airways, Scandanavian Airways and no frills operators such as Easyjet and Ryanair.  Check deals with a number of airlines with Expedia.

Do

Copenhagen, the capital city is a great place to visit. One of the easiest cities in Europe to visit with a family, cars seem to have been relegated behind walkers and cyclists and the place abounds with pavement cafes, mime artists (its not all good!), small art galleries, hippy hang outs and some first rate museums. It is very conscious of its reputation as a liberal city and you might have to occasionally shield your children’s eyes from unexpected toplesness and public displays of affection.

Visit Arhus, which has Viking origins and is one of the liveliest and prettiest towns in Denmark. It would be a very good place to base yourself as it is central, has very good transport links and seems to typify all that is best in a Danish city – self-effacing, laid back, artistic, with some excellent modern hotels and architecture.

Explore Funen, known as the garden of Denmark for its fields of fruit trees and vegetables. A place of writers and artists, (Hans Christian Anderson is from here) drawn to the soft light, lovely beaches and bucolic nature of this amiable area. Best seen by bike.

Eat

Enthusiastic eaters, the Danes seem often to go for quantity over quality. Most of note are the delicious and numerous beers, the younger members of the family should fast acquire a taste for pickled fish and black bread. We recommend going to places which have buffets, Danes do these in style and it’s a very good introduction to local cuisine.
