Easter family holidays
EASTER HOLIDAY HUNT
Unfortunately, holiday prices and availability generally reflect the popularity of this time of year among families, although you certainly won’t encounter the peak prices – or the crowds – of high summer, so it’s worth thinking of making Easter your main holiday of the year. Do remember to check out in advance what vaccinations you may need and to book them in advance.
If you’re travelling with younger kids and don’t fancy a long flight, the northern Mediterranean will still be out of bounds for beach holidays. Think instead of Malta, Morocco, Tunisia, a Canary Island such as Tenerife, Egypt, Cyprus and Turkey – all as good for Easter as they are for half term, with temperatures not yet unpleasantly hot.
Warmer spots for those with older kids include Oman and Dubai, and further afield the likes of Kenya, India and Thailand. The latter in particular are brilliant for families on a budget, with low accommodation and eating costs balancing out flight prices.
In fact, there’s nowhere that’s not within reach of an Easter holiday, although in some farther-flung or less familiar locations, you might think about choosing the security blanket of an escorted adventure holiday – the Adventure Company is just one of the firms taking families to many of the abovementioned destinations and others besides. Renting a cottage, villa or apartment, at home or abroad, is another classic choice for families, allowing plenty of freedom and flexibility – whether in windswept Suffolk, in the Algarve in Portugal or on a Greek island such as Crete, or across the Atlantic in Orlando or on a Caribbean island such as St Lucia.
Don’t forget that Easter is also a good time for a skiing holiday – resorts are cheaper and less crowded than at Christmas or February half-term, although you’ll need to go higher to be sure of snow.
But then you might not want to go away at all, and who can blame you when there’s so much happening in the UK – and so much chocolate to plough through?! Check out our selection of UK hotels and resorts with optional childcare, or if you fancy an all-singing all-dancing break, Butlins offers fabulous Easter breaks for those quick enough to grab one of their great offers. For something more relaxing in a stunning location with almost every optional family activity you could dream of, check out Bluestone. Most places run their own Easter activities; if they don’t, you might like to seek out a local National Trust property hosting egg hunts, trails and other seasonal family events.
If you can’t make it away for a ‘proper’ holiday, think about a city break. You could, for instance, treat your kids to a top family show in the West End of London or check out the family-friendly attractions of Edinburgh. Another home-based option is a break at one of the UK’s great themeparks, most of which will have just reopened for the season, usually with at least two or three new attractions. Takethefamily can also offer an exclusive 10% discount on Junior Red Letter days, from fame school or a private family flight to a go at ‘body flying’.
