Indian Ocean family holidays

Mauritius, the Seychelles, the Maldives  and Sri Lanka… The islands of the Indian Ocean can offer very different experiences for family holidays, from relaxing breaks at luxury family-friendly resorts with all the amenities a parent could wish for to authentic experiences of cultures far removed from our own.
 
Mauritius, the Seychelles and the Maldives are all prime beach-holiday destinations with watersports opportunities galore for those who can tear themselves away from their loungers. There are also some superb kids' clubs in this neck of the woods. The Maldives has traditionally been the preserve of honeymooners but is fast opening itself up more to the family market, although its pleasures usually command a very high price.

Sri Lanka is a different kettle of fish and a much less obvious choice than the first three but will reward you hugely for your efforts, with picture-postcard beaches but also a acompelling cultural legacy and the chance to ogle wildlife usually seen only in textbooks.

There are technically many other islands in the Indian Ocean, some of them brilliant for families, most notably Zanzibar and Penang in Malaysia.
