Kaprun family holidays and breaks

Not many places on Earth offer the opportunity to ski in the morning and relax by the pool or lake in temperatures of 80°F+ in the afternoon. Kaprun is a charming village in its own right, set against the backdrop of the towering Kitzsteinhorn and with a beautiful lake on its doorstep. But the big draw for family holidays in this resort in the state of Salzburg its the potential for year-round skiing for beginners and advanced skiers, thanks to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier with its guaranteed snow whatever the winter weather.

Aside the glacier, two other areas are covered by the Europa Sport Region lift pass. All three areas cater well to beginners and advanced skiers, so a family with differing levels of skiing ability can at least enjoy being in the same general area together.

What to do

Ski! There's guaranteed snow and skiing here, with 11m of snowfall on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier between November and April, although if conditions are poor elsewhere, it draws everyone from miles around and gets very busy. Very few places offer as much powder during the winter as the glacier, and there's also the challenging mogul fields. Even if you don’t ski it’s worth checking out the glacier – the gondola ride alone is spectacular.

Enjoy 130km of piste accessible via 55 lifts in the Europa Sport Region. Beginners can learn on the Lechnerberg slopes adjacent to Kaprun. The glacier itself also offers gentle slopes ideal for learning. For intermediates and advance skiers there’s a great range of skiing on both the glacier and the Schmittenhöhe slopes.

Take advantage of the Optimum Leisure Centre, with indoor/outdoor pool, bowling, tobogganing, tennis and squash.

Hit the village of Kaprun or town of Zell-am-See for shopping and/or an evening out.

In summer, in addition to skiing, introduce kids to gold-panning and kayaking. There’s also hiking, mountain-biking, swimming, and much much more. And a trip to Austria’s picturesque second city Salzburg is a must.

Where to stay

For accommodation suited to family holidays in Kaprun, see our recommendations and deals in the right-hand column of this page.

When

The ski season in Kaprun runs from mid-December to mid-December! If you want to ski in summer, you need to prepare for an early start, before the top layer of snow turns to slush.

If you have younger kids, consider January (cheaper, but cold) or March and later (more expensive, less cold) and try to avoid half term.

The summer season lasts from early June to September. Although it can rain, temperatures are generally warmer than in the UK, unless you're at the higher altitudes.

How

There are frequent flights between the UK and Salzburg, from which it's about a 90min drive. Other options include a 2.5hr transfer from Innsbruck in the Tirol. Take a look at the latest flight deals.

We wouldn't recommend driving to Kaprun for those planning 1wk family holidays here, skiing. But it's an option in the summer – it's a long drive from the Channel ferry port of Calais (10-12hr), but you can break up the journey along the way.

Eat

Most family holidays in Kaprun are packages including breakfast and dinner at your hotel, If you're skiing during the day, there are around 30 mountain restaurants to choose from (most remain open in summer).

See more on local cuisine in our Salzburg and Austria destination pages.

Cost

Prices for family holidays in Kaprun vary hugely depending on the time of year, with February half-term skiing costing as much as £1,000+ for an adult, with everything included. Children get considerable reductions.

In summer, an adult can pay less than £400 during peak season for a self-drive holiday with half-board accommodation included. Flight options are available too, and there are generous discounts for children and free places for infants.
