Lefkas family holidays and breaks

The Ionian Island of Lefkas – named for the 'White Rock' that frames the beaches on the west coast – is surprisingly green and mountainous, with a seemingly endless number of long, sandy beaches. This quiet island, connected to the mainland by a bridge, is a fantastic place for family holidays involving watersports, with numerous bays and small islands for you to explore, including Skorpios, the island owned by the Onassis family.

What to do

Sail, windsurf, sea-kayaking, waterski, wakeboard, scuba-dive and snorkel – Lefkas is a mecca for watersports.

Go cycling or take a hike, or take to the skies and paraglide.

Explore the main town of Lefkada, set around a picturesque bay, with traditional multi-coloured timber-framed houses and a great selection of shops, bars and restaurants.

Where to stay

Accommodation suitable for family holidays on Lefkas includes the family-friendly self-catering complex Mousses (see also our feature).

When

Summer is the best time to schedule family holidays to make the most of the fantastic watersports Lefkas has to offer. Most hotels are open from May to October, with July and August the busiest (and hottest) months.

How

Weekly charter flights from London Gatwick and Manchester run from May to October. See our flight deals and car-hire pages.

The island is also accessible via a bridge from mainland Greece – it’s about a 4hr drive from Athens.

Eat

This very fertile island famous for its lush vegetation, olive trees, vines and fruit is a great place to enjoy lazy lunches in the summer sun and forget about the 9 to 5.

The town of Nidri has dozens of tavernas and restaurants offering a range of freshly cooked traditional Greek dishes, with lots of salads and fish. You’ll also find plenty of British menu favourites that can help on family holidays with fussy eaters.

Cost

Eating out on Lefkas is relatively inexpensive by UK standards, but choosing self-catering accommodation can make family holidays here even better value.

The cheapest way to get active on the water is to book an activity package holiday that includes watersports
