A French village dating back to the 11th century, Les Gets offers a real insight into traditional life in the French Alps in addition to a great range of skiing and boarding in winter plus mountain-biking and a multitude of other sports in summer. Both seasons are great for outdoorsy family holidays.

The resort is also a good base for exploring the wider area, with modern entertainments and conveniences including an ice rink, a bowling alley, a museum, a cinema, a wide range of shops, a traditional weekly market and plenty of bars.

What to do

Ski! Les Gets is part of the largest ski area in Europe – via the Portes du Soleil network, it links into resorts including Morzine, Avoriaz and Chalet. This vast skiing area has something for everyone, from peaceful nursery slopes in the heart of Les Gets to the notorious 'Wall' on the Swiss border.

Try snowshoeing, dog-sledding, paragliding and ice-skating.

In summer, sample the mountain-bike trails for which Les Gets is famous – both in terms of quality and variety.

Try your hand at everything from pony-trekking to paragliding, although don't forget to factor some leisurely days beside the lake into family holidays.

When

The ski season here runs mid-Dec–mid-April – though Les Gets is a fairly low resort, snow-cannon cover is excellent and the grass-based pistes hold the snow well. February half-term is busy and expensive – mid-January and mid-March are ideally suited to family holidays for those not yet bound by school terms.

The summer season is relatively short, running early June–mid-Sept. Temperatures in July and August are typically in the high 20°Cs, and you can expect plenty of sunny days, although colder and wetter alpine weather can roll in unexpectedly.

How

There are numerous flights into Geneva in Switzerland from a variety of UK airports, with the transfer to Les Gets taking little over an hour.

Alternatively, Les Gets is one of the closest resorts to the English Channel, with a driving time of approximately 8hrs from the ferry port of Calais, almost all by motorway.

Eat

If you're staying in a chalet or hotel, dinner is normally included. However, there are a wide variety of restaurants in the resort catering to those on family holidays of all budgets, some serving traditional mountain fare and some offering outstanding views of Mont Blanc.

Cost

Costs vary significantly according to when you schedule your family holidays: during February half term, adults may not expect much change from £1,000pp, with ski passes and equipment on top. At other times prices can be half that amount.

In summer, Les Gets represents great value, with self-catering accommodation starting at £685 for a family of 4, including ferry crossings, on peak August dates. Activity costs can add up but there are plenty of things to do without spending too much more.
