Morzine family holidays and breaks

Due to its privileged setting and wonderful facilities, Morzine has developed into one of Europe’s best-known winter and summer alpine resorts and is a great choice for family holidays in either season. In winter it's at the centre of one of the largest internationally linked ski areas in the Alps, the Portes du Soleil, while in summer it's a paradise for lovers of the mountains, with the village waking up again with activities, sports, festivals and celebrations.

Located in the French Alps, between Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc, this is one of the most beautiful areas of the world, but though an internationally renowned destination, Morzine has remained a picturesque traditional market town with a long and proud history.

What to do

Morzine boasts an immense variety of skiing and snowboarding for all abilities, with 650km of pistes and more than 200 lifts across 13 linked resorts in France and Switzerland. Its many excellent ski schools range from the French national ski school (ESF) to smaller independent schools such as the British Alpine Ski School (BASS). There is an array of non-skiing activities, including snow-shoeing, ice-skating, tobogganing, paragliding, snow-scootering, husky-dog sledding and horse-drawn sleigh-rides.

For the less active, the village offers cultural and heritage visits, superb shops and a large choice of cafés, bars and restaurants.

In summer, swim in the lakes or the Olympic-size outdoor pool, and go ice-skating, toboggan-racing, mountain-boarding, horse-riding, quad-biking, zipwiring, to the Airborne Adventure Park (older kids), to the Indiana Park (with younger children), with a bridge, ladder, tarzan-swing and more, and to the skate-park. There are also mountain donkey rambles, mountain treks, cycling, rafting, canyoning, parapenting, rock-climbing and caving, plus tennis courts and a golf course.

But don't forget this is also the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery and pure mountain air. The ski-lifts access hundreds of kilometres of footpaths and mountain-bike trails with stunning panoramic views.

When

The ski season in Morzine lasts mid-Dec–late Apr, while for summer family holidays, late June to mid-Sept are the months.

The town buzzes in both winter and summer, with festivals and events including a weekly market, world mountain-bike and paragliding championships, the Mont-Blanc Rally and the Tour de France.

How

Morzine is easily accessible from the UK and Ireland, with a short airport transfer of just over 1hr from Geneva in Switzerland. It's a little over 8hrs' drive from the ferry port of Calais.

Eat

Many chalets and hotels provide excellent in-house meals, but there are also local restaurants to cater to most budgets and tastes, serving everything from pizza and pasta to steaks and hearty meat dishes, local Savoyard specialities and gourmet French cuisine. There are also a wide range of scenic mountain restaurants and snack bars, although family holidays in Morzine aren't complete without at least one a picnic in the mountains overlooking Mont Blanc!

Cost

Morzine is reasonably priced for a major alpine resort, although like any resort, in the peak winter ski season it can be very expensive.

Easter is highly recommended for family holidays if you're coming to ski, with great snow conditions until late April, long sunny days, no lift queues, a relaxed family atmosphere and better prices.

In summer, accommodation is generally cheaper. Activities can be expensive but are professionally organised with the emphasis on safety, and there is also plenty to do that costs little or nothing, such as walking in the mountains and swimming in the alpine lakes!
