Rhodes family holidays and breaks

Rhodes is among the most-visited of all the Greek Islands, and for good reason: along its east coast are miles of sandy beaches and it has the sunniest climate in Greece, making it a popular (sometimes too-popular) spot for family holidays.

The capital, Rhodes city, is a remarkably well-preserved medieval gem: situated in a strategic spot across many of the ancient Mediterranean trade routes, Rhodes was settled by the fabled Knights of St John on their way back from the Crusades, who extended the city and used it as a base for 200 years.

Eat

Happily as far as family holidays are concerned, Rhodes has restaurants and tavernas serving food for all tastes. The capital has a number of fast-food, souvlaki and pizza places. In the medieval town, try traditional dishes such as meat cooked in earthenware pots with potatoes and onion, while the modern town has everything from Cypriot to Chinese, French and Danish restaurants.

Quiet little tavernas are the place to sample local specialties such as hilopites (egg noodles in soup) and moussaka, while cafés are good spots for juice, coffee, ouzo or wine with nibbles over a game of backgammon or cards.

Pastry shops sell delicious traditional sweets including kataifi, baklava and belekounia.

Cost

Seven-night hotel packages on Rhodes costs £150–600pp, including flights. The best bargains are to be had in May and September, when temperatures are often still good enough for family holidays.
