Family Holidays Overview

Family Holidays: Slovenia family holidays

Take the Family holiday rating 4 stars out of 5

Why

The Julian Alps and Soca River Valley in Slovenia are a wonderful base for a varied family activity holiday. Here you can experience a holiday away from mainstream tourism and delight in the culture, people and traditions of this quiet corner of Europe.

Lying at the feet of the Julian Alps and the Triglav National Park, this is an area of truly outstanding natural beauty, and rich in history.

You will have access to many of Slovenia’s many other beautiful areas including Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj, the charming port of Piran on the Adriatic, with its Venetian style facades, as well as the spectacular Skocjanska Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
If, however, you are not prepared to embrace a culture where tourism has not been geared to the traditional demands of UK mass tourism then this is perhaps not the place for you.

When

In spring the meadows and valleys are lush and the waterfalls are spectacular. In the summer holidays, the average daytime temperatures are perfect, at around 25°C. Autumn is harvest season, and in October the forested slopes are a blaze of colour.

How

Fly from Stansted to Ljubljana with Easyjet.

Do

There are lots of activities available in and around the Soca River Valley and the surrounding mountains, including:

  • Walking,
  • Canyoning,
  • Mountain Biking,
  • Mini Rafting,
  • Kayaking,
  • Canoeing
  • White Water Rafting,
  • Horse Riding

Other recommended visits include 'The First World War Museum' at Kobarid voted European Museum of the Year in 1993, or taking the car train through the mountains to Lake Bohinj for the day, and enjoying a boat trip on the beautiful lake.

Eat

The region is renowned for its excellent home cooking and hospitality. Its culinary specialities range from potatoes with cottage cheese, delicious soups and fresh vegetables, to various dishes based around the famous marble trout from the River Soca. Being so close to the Italian border, you, and the kids, will also be delighted to find excellent pizza and ice-cream, and adults can also enjoy the traditional home made schnapps

Cost

Slovenia is a relatively inexpensive European destination. And if you book far enough in advance you can get good deals on Easyjet flights from London.
