We are very pleased that Dea Birkett has very kindly agreed to contribute to TaketheFamily on a regular basis, sharing her extensive travelling with kids wisdom, with her Destination of the Month and Dea's Tip of the month.

Dea Birkett is a distinguished travel writer and broadcaster. Her first travel book, Jella: A Woman At Sea, won the Somerset Maugham award and was shortlisted for Travel Writer of the Year, and she has written many more best sellers since then.

Dea had a weekly column in the Guardian for five years, Travelling with Kids, and is Director of 'Kids in Museums', founded when her two-year old son was thrown out of the Aztec exhibition at the Royal Academy for shouting ‘Monster!’ at a statue of Eagleman. Kids in Museums works with the Guardian on the Guardian Family Friendly Museum Award, the biggest museum award in Britain and judged by families. Dea is also Creative Director of Many Rivers Films, making pioneering documentaries for Channel 4, and founded and runs *Travel Writing Workshops, day-long workshops for aspiring travel writers.

Dea lives with her boyfriend and their three children – a teenager and six-year-old twins. They still keep travelling

*BLOOMSBURY TRAVEL WRITING WORKSHOP on Saturday 14th June 2008 with Rory Maclean (author of Radio 4 Book of the Week - Magic Bus), Dea Birkett, and a guest editor from a national publication who will share their secrets on what they look for in a travel article. The Workshop is held in The Gradidge Room, a Georgian reception room overlooking Queen Square, and is an all-day intensive workshop for those who are new to travel writing or who want to improve their writing skills. The aim of the day is to ensure an editor or publisher can only say 'Yes!'. The cost is £105 for the full day.

There is also a date set for the Dublin Travel Writing Workshop to be held at the prestigious James Joyce Centre on May 17th, or a Paris Travel Writing Workshop on June 28th held at the Shakespeare and Company bookstore. Just go to the website, www.travelworkshops.co.uk for further details.
