After 30 years as a teacher, Jos Simon took early retirement and started a late-blooming travel-writing career. Suddenly, all the holiday things he’d done with his wife and children for decades (and for nothing) – touring Europe, researching destinations, keeping a log, telling them stuff, taking photographs – he now got paid for. Henceforth, he didn’t have to put up with his children’s raised eyebrows, stifled giggles or muttered protests when he tried to educate them. Readers can’t answer back.

Contributions to a variety of holiday, lifestyle and caravan/motorcaravan magazines led in turn to guidebook commissions for the Frommer’s ‘With your family’ series – first on Croatia, then the Greek Islands. Currently working on ‘Crete Day by Day’ for the same publisher, he says that his absolute favourite thing to do in the world is to go on family holidays – though now, his mutinous children being in their 30s and old enough to know better, with his grandchildren (aged six and four).
