5 Ways to Make Your Money Go Further on Family City Breaks and Ski Holidays

Fun on the slopes in Alpe d'Huez.Fun on the slopes in Alpe d'Huez.

If you’re keen to hit the ski slopes with the kids this year but are worried about how far your holiday budget will take you after the pound’s recent struggles, our friends at FairFX have come up with some fantastic recommendations for two-centre holidays where you can get more for your money while combining a great family ski holiday with a city break. They’ve included the combined cost of ski passes and equipment hire so you can judge which destinations will leave you enough money for a few extra treats.

Poland: Krakow and Zakopane

Eastern Europe offers fantastic alternative ski destinations where you’ll feel your money going much further than in Western Europe. Great for beginners with 16 pistes, Zakopane is the cheapest, with a day’s skiing for just £23pp. The resort is just a 100-minute drive from Krakow or two hours (£3) on the ski bus.

Hungary: Budapest and Kekes

A snip at just £30 for a day’s skiing, Hungary’s highest mountain is more about fun than serious piste action, but there are eight scenic courses plus the opportunity for night skiing. Your flight time to Budapest from London is just under two and a half hours, and there’s plenty to do in the Hungarian capital with kids. Kekes is just over an hour from Budapest (or just under two hours on the £6 bus).

• Czech Republic: Prague and Spindleruv Mlyn

Just over two hours outside of the fairytale Czech capital, Spindleruv Mlyn offers skiing for up to five months of the year for £33 a day. Take the ski bus for £3, taking three hours, or opt for a speedier private transfer. In Prague itself, stroll across the UNESCO-listed Charles Bridge and hike up the hill to the 9th-century castle.

• France: Grenoble and Alpe d'Huez

One of the sunniest resorts in the Alps, Alpe d’Huez offers great skiing for all abilities, including glacier skiing for the advanced. A day’s skiing costs £62 – reasonable for the French Alps – and the bus from Grenoble, taking 1 hour 45 minutes, costs €18.

Austria: Salzburg and Kitzbühel

With 170km of piste, snow-sure Kitzbühel combines charming with cosmopolitan and offers a day’s skiing for £73. Hop aboard the snow shuttle from Salzburg (a great city to explore with kids) for just €13, taking 80 minutes.
