6 Reasons to Choose a Self-catering Ski Holiday with Kids

Family fun on the slopes.Family fun on the slopes.

There’s no getting round the fact that skiing isn’t a cheap family holiday – after travel, accommodation and food, you have to factor in additional costs that might include ski equipment hire, lift-passes, ski tuition, childcare and all kinds of fun mountain activities when you’re not on the slopes.

Self-catering can be a great option for those looking for a great-value ski holiday – as we explore in our feature on a February half-term family ski holiday on a budget. But there are other reasons beyond saving money for taking the self-catering route:

• Freedom. Unlike hotels, some ski apartments are flexible as to your length of stay and arrival and departure dates – which can help you get better travel deals. For instance, with Christmas and and New Year’s Day both falling on Sunday in 2016, Pierre & Vacances is offering seven-night stays starting mid-week, allowing families to book travel to suit both their schedule and their budget. That means you can also choose shorter or longer breaks, to suit you.

• Flexibility. Not everyone – and especially kids – wants to sit in the same hotel restaurant for three meals a day. Booking a ski apartment means you can eat what you want, when you want and where you want, whether it’s a pizza at home in front of a movie or a lively restaurant. Pierre & Vacances offers discounts in local restaurants, grocery deliveries and a takeaway order service, and some properties have their own breakfast rooms and/or restaurants.

• Ease. If you don’t book a ski package with flights, you are free to travel to your destination as you wish. And if you travel by car, you can take much more stuff with you and in doing so save money in resort. The drive may be long - but remember that the journey can be almost as much fun as the holiday if you break it up and enjoy a couple of stop-overs en route.

• Convenience. Some self-catering operators, including Pierre & Vacances, make life easier (and save you money) by providing ‘ski packs’ combining accommodation and lift passes that will be waiting for you in your apartments on arrival, meaning no having to get up early to queue at the offices.

• Pampering. Going self-catering doesn’t mean you can’t spoil yourself. For example, Pierre & Vacances’ Premium Residences have added facilities including spas and swimming pools. You can also order packages that include beds made on arrival and mid-week cleaning, and some properties have kids’ clubs.

• Pet-friendliness. You can even bring the dog on a Pierre & Vacances ski holiday!
