Reasons to Take the Kids Skiing in Andorra

Family on the slopes in Andorra.Family on the slopes in Andorra.

Those who’ve already skied or boarded in Andorra know that for a small country, it packs a big punch and is an ideal place to take to the slopes. Above all, this is a fantastic destination for family ski holidays, with masses of gentle green and blue runs to help build little ones’ confidence, some of the best English-speaking ski schools in Europe, and some hotels offering free kids’ clubs for ages 3–11 years. We’ve looked at what makes Andorra so special.

• Huge Investment in Ski Resorts
Andorra has invested 10s of millions of Euros in infrastructure over the last 5-10 years, meaning its resorts of Arinsal, El Tarter, Pas de la Casa and Soldeu have an almost purpose-built feel. Arinsal is great for families and beginners, with quieter, gentle slopes, excellent après activities and great-value family accommodation.

Soldeu and El Tarter are livelier in terms of nightlife, although El Tarter is quieter than its neighbour. It offers great access to the slopes and a very family-friendly hotel in the form of Neilson’s Hôtel del Clos. Soldeu is the best all-rounder, with mainly four-star hotels at three-star prices, easy piste access and a great array of bars, restaurants and shops.

• Quieter Slopes
As Andorra isn’t as well known as the big-named resorts, its slopes are naturally a bit quieter, especially at peak times such as Christmas, New Year and February half term. In low season, meanwhile, you’ll sometimes feel as if you have the runs to yourself. Andorra’s two ski areas, the 63km Vallnord (Arinsal and Pal) and the huge 210km Grandvalira (El Tarter, Pas de la Casa and Soldeu) have such good lift systems that you’ll never wait as long as would elsewhere, even at busy periods.

• The English-speaking Ski Instructors
Andorra has an unusually high ratio of native English speakers teaching skiing and boarding  – possibly due to the fact that this is such a lovely place to be. While just about all ski and board instructors speak excellent English, having a native speaker does make things that bit easier at times.

• The Value for Money
With the lowest VAT tax rates in Europe (4.5%, against the UK’s 20%), lift-passes passes, equipment hire and tuition along with food and drink are all great value in Andorra compared with other countries.

• The Human Scale
Andorra is so tiny (it could fit into the Yorkshire Dales nearly three times!) that the capital, Andorra la Vella, is only about half an hour’s bus-ride from the ski resorts. Buses run regularly and it’s worth the trip for Andorra la Vella’s 2000+ shops and restaurants, as well as Caldea, Europe’s largest thermal spa, with 6000m2 of indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, hot tubs, bubble beds and much more.
