There are frequent flights from London and other UK airports to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Flight time to China is around 10 hours and Beijing is eight hours ahead of GMT, so factor in jet-lag.

In terms of getting around, bear in mind that in the crowded cities, buggy-pushing can be arduous and air pollution a problem. Beijing is fairly easy to get around thanks to an efficient subway – bikes are cheap to rent but, again, congestion and air pollution might put you off.
