How to get to Sydney

There are regular indirect flights to Sydney from London Heathrow or Gatwick and Manchester, which can be a good option for family holidays, as the distance is so great. The one or two stops en route may allow you to spend time in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong or Bangkok. Check deals with Virgin Atlantic or Expedia; expect to pay from £800pp economy.

Travel time obviously depends on connections and stopover, but there's about 22–23hrs of actual flying involved. See our Flying With Kids page for advice, including how to cope with jet-lag, and read about other families' experiences of flights to Australia with young children on our forum thread Long Journey Down Under.

Kingsford-Smith International Airport is 9km south-east of the centre of Sydney. Domestic flights also mainly arrive and depart from here, from T2, but be warned that the distance between T1 and T2 is immense – check if your airline offers a free shuttle if you're transferring to an internal flight.
