Whether you're looking for a relaxing or an active family holiday, or a bit of both, Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands has your name all over it. One of the world's best-known tropical islands by virtue of being owned by Sir Richard Branson, it's also, perhaps surprisingly, a good option for a green family holiday – promoting sustainability within its community and environment, it has the ultimate aim of being completely reliant on its own energy. It also encourages guests to bring supplies for local schools and clinics as part of its Pack for a Purpose campaign.

Renowned as a private retreat, Necker can be booked exclusively, for up to 34 people. Or at certain times of the year ('Celebration Weeks'), it's possible to book individual rooms for up to seven nights, making use of all the island's facilities and activities, and socialising with other guests.

A wealth of activities to get involved in includes SUP paddleboarding, water-skiing, kayaking, snorkelling and diving (both courses and excursions around the island). Alternatively, laze around on one of the island beaches (one of which you can access by zipwire from the main house), take a dip in one of the infinity pools (one with a swim-up bar), play tennis or practise yoga.

Other memorable experiences include eating sushi from a floating bar, enjoying a night-time beach BBQ and bonfire, and attending one of the notorious party nights. This island is also a haven for wildlife including flamingos, iguanas and giant tortoises, and there is a population of imported lemurs (an endangered species).

Kids are welcomed with open arms and even get their own bunk-room filled with toys and games. All bookings include accommodation, all meals and drinks, return airport transfers, full use of island facilities and watersports equipment, WiFi and local tax – hence, it's all-inclusive apart from flights.
