Family-friendly days out in France

France has long been a favorite of us Brits, and it’s easy to see why; with easy access, locally sourced delicious treats for gourmet lovers young and old, vibrant markets, stunning and diverse scenery, a rich history and a plentiful scattering of chateaux throughout that are just ripe for a runaround.

Head for the beaches; the glamorous and glitzy in the south of France or the windswept and barren in the north, where you’ll also find plenty of war cemeteries for a sobering but informative day.

Paris is within easy reach for a day out from England and this beautiful city never fails to delight with all its charms. Packed with historic monuments, charming cafes and delightful gardens lots of the good stuff to see is within spitting distance of each other so you can pack in the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, lunch in Le Marais, an afternoon treat in the Tuileries Gardens and an evening boat trip along the Seine taking in all the sights that you’ve missed on foot, within a day.

Disneyland is an obvious place to spend a day and one that never fails to impress but there are plenty of other fantastic theme -parks in France worth a visit. Check out Futuroscope in Chassneuil-du-Poitou (one for multi-media enthusiasts), Vulcania, a fun and informative volcano-themed park in the Auvergne and Puy du Fou (the second most popular theme park in France after Disneyland), a historical theme park in the Vendee region.

France has ten national parks, a haven for sporting enthusiasts and you can easily spend a day canoeing, white water rafting, hiking, horse riding or even paragliding amongst fantastic scenery.

Many days out can be spent exploring the many chateaus. The Loire is a great place to start with – Chenonceau, Blois and Chaumont are just some of the must-sees. Chateau Royal de Blois has light shows to enchant the kids and is in the centre of town so is easy to get to and close by you’ll find the House of Magic for even more enchantment.

The palace to top all of them is, of course, Versailles. Kids can’t fail to be impressed with how the Sun King lived and after a day here you’ll humble home will never seem the same.
