Family-friendly days out in Baden-Württemberg

Baden-Wurtemberg, home to the Black Forest and bordering France and Switzerland in southeast Germany, pays high dividends to those who come here. While the name The Black Forest is enough to strike terror into your heart (so-called because of the thickness of the canopy blocking out the sunlight), the reality is something entirely different. It’s a place of immeasurable beauty, mountainous, very, very green and peppered with cute historic villages, churches and castles and fortresses that look as though they’ve come straight from the cover of a chocolate box, all of which, of course, makes for plenty of great days out.

There are endless sporting opportunities, from innumerable cycle trails, hiking and skiing as well as fishing, canoeing and horse-riding. This is also the land of the cuckoo clock (they were first made here in the 17th century) and a trip to the Clock Museum in Furtwangen will give you an interesting history of timekeeping.

This area is peppered with lakes, which are perfect for a dip and most of the towns have outdoor pools too so bring your swimming costumes.

Stuttgart is the capital of this region and has museums and parks to keep you busy. Car fanatics will enjoy a trip to the Car Museum and there’s also a great zoo and botanical garden. Other towns that should be on your list are Baden-Baden, an elegant spa town and Freudenstadt, which has the largest market square in Germany.

You can’t move without bumping into a castle or two, with soaring turrets that merit a day’s exploration. Ludwigsburg Residential Palace is an untouched Baroque Palace with sumptuous rooms and is family-friendly with informative and interactive museums while other top castles to visit include Heidelberg, Schetzwingen and Hohenzollern castles.
