Among the northernmost Aegean Islands, Lemnos (sometimes spelt Limnos) is also one of the most untouched, due to once being home to a sizeable army base as well as having an erratic ferry service. Now the army presence has been considerably reduced, it's is an easier and more tempting proposition for families, with plenty of mid-market accommodation if lots of (stingless!) jellyfish and a choice of operators specialising in family activity holidays.

Things to do with kids in Lemnos

Get active. Sailing, cycling, walking and birdwatching (including flamingoes on lakes Alyki and Chortarolimni) are popular things to do in Lemnos.

Discover the lovely, empty beaches of the west of the island. Head for Avlonas, which is pristine, or the town beaches of Romeïkós Yialós and Toúrkikos Yialós and Rihá Nerá. Kondias is the most appealing of the towns in this area. Go now before developers do here what they have done to so many other parts of Greece.

Venture to the east, which is more bucolic – low-lying, with beautiful vegetation, creeks and sandy beaches. The best beach is probably Keros, where you can try your hand at windsurfing and kitesurfing, and there are several interesting grottos in the area.

Tour the capital Myrina – a small, quiet place with a few Ottoman remains, old stone mansions, seaside promenade, very good archaeological museum and castle in a dramatic position on the peninsula, with its own deer population.

Experience the Petrified Forest near Moudros, with fossilised trunks, leaves, fruit and palm-tree roots dating from 20-22 million years ago.

Tour the important archaelogical sites of Hephaestia, prehistoric capital of the Pelasgians, and Poliochni, believed to be Europe's oldest Neolithic city. There are also some thermal springs near Hephaestia, while the village of Káspakas is famed for its pretty waterfalls.

Eat

Lemnos is the place to try authentic Greek food, although most hotels offer international favourites too. Local specialities include the cheeses kalathaki and melíchloro, thyme honey and the famed Muscat of Limnos, a sweet white wine. Don't miss the fresh fish either. When to go to Lemnos

Lemnos has a similar climate to the other islands of the north-eastern Aegean but is drier. Strong winds occasionally blow but rainfall is very rare. The hottest times are late July and August, averaging 27°C, although from late April to mid October temperatures are already in the low 20°Cs.

Although the number of visitors to Lemnos is increasing, this is only recent, so even in high season you won't affected by the mad rush associated with some of the other Greek islands.

Lemnos isn't the place for the kind of budget offerings and slasher deals you can find elsewhere in Greece; on the other hand, its relatively untouristy nature means you can count on very reasonable prices while you're exploring the island.
