Things to do with kids in The Peloponnese

Peloponnese Best Beaches and Outdoor Activities

• Head for the beaches of the Messinia area – some of the very best in Greece, a country of fabulous beaches. With older kids, this is a great place to learn to sail or windsurf. North of its Navarino Bay are excellent bays with sand dunes and lagoons, including the iconic Voidokilia Beach with its symmetrical semi-circle shape reminiscent of the Greek letter Ω. This is a lovely area to explore by bike.

• Go for a hike – the best spots for walking in the Peloponnese are the mountains of Arcadia with their wildflowers, or the isolated Mani with its famous towerhouses dating from the Ottoman occupation.

• In winter, ski on Mount Helmos.

History and Culture in the Peloponnese

• Ogle the castle of Niokastro overlooking Navarino Bay, scene of the historic naval battle in 1827.

• Don’t miss Olympia, site of the Olympic Games in classical times, with impressive ruins including the original Olympic stadium, plus a great museum.

• Admire early-19th-century Koroni with its Venetian castle, built in 1206 to survey the shipping lanes between the Adriatic and Crete.

• Explore the archaeological site of Mycenae, once a major centre of Greek civilisation.

• Marvel at Mystras, an abandoned Byzantine capital that’s now a UNESCO-listed World Heritage site for its breathtaking medieval ruins.

• Visit the Theatre of Epidaurus, one of the world’s best-preserved ancient theatres, designed so 15,000 spectators could hear the actors without amplification.

• Discover the cosmopolitan, atmospheric seaport of Nafplio, Greece’s first capital.

Eating in The Peloponnese

Food in the Peloponnese is based on hyper-local ingredients – the Greek mainland has an abundance of regional produce. Local tavernas offer excellent meat, fish and vegetable dishes (plus pizzas if desired), often in the form of small mezedes, while resorts offer both local and global cuisine.

When to go to The Peloponnese

The best time to visit the Peloponnese is April, May, September or October, with more pleasant temperatures than in high season, especially for family holidays with younger kids, and fewer people. With school-age kids, the Peloponnese is a good bet for the May and October half terms

How to get to The Peloponnese

There are direct seasonal flights from the UK to the Peloponnese, departing from London airports, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh and landing at Kalamata International. Flights take 3.5–4.5 hours, and your driving or transfer time will be about 40 minutes to two hours, depending on where exactly in the Peloponnese you are going.

Alternatively, we can book you on a flight to Athens, from which, it’s a 2-hour drive or transfer to Nafplio, or double that to the southern Peloponnese.
