Family-friendly places to stay in Hungary

Accommodation is good value in Hungary in comparison with many places, although many providers charge in Euros (probably because of Hungary’s popularity with Germans). As everywhere, all-inclusive deals can save you lots of money and, especially with younger kids, hassle, though they’re restrictive for those who like to discover local restaurants.

Balaton is a good place for self-catering villas and apartments. A sample price for a week in a 4-bedroom villa sleeping up to 14 in Siófok, with a children’s playground and swimming pool, is £740–£1,300. Try to find a provider who takes payment in forints or sterling instead of Euros.

There are some cracking family-friendly hotels by Balaton too. The Hotel Marina in a beachfront park in Balatonfüred on the northern shore offers all-inclusive family packages from May to Sept, an indoor pool and sauna, kids activities, a clubhouse, a playroom, a lagoon, and games and films. Optional extras include canoeing, sailing, cycling and spa treatments. The same group, Danubius, runs the nearby Hotel Annabella, another family resort with a private beach, children’s programs, sports activities and swimming pools. Check Danubius' website for its many hotels around Hungary, including several in Budapest.

At Hévíz, site of the famous thermal lake, the Hunguest Hotel Helios has thermal baths, outdoor pools (one for kids), a playground, kids’ activities, and free or discounted children’s accommodation according to age.
