Family-friendly days out in the Italian Lakes

While the Italian Lakes conjure up images of sophisticated glamour, they are, perhaps surprisingly, great for breaks with kids. The shores are peppered with campsites and beaches, the lakes provide ample opportunity to head out on the water under steam or sail, there are cable cars for the views and gorgeous buildings hugging the shorelines, including plenty of restaurants and cafes, perfectly positioned to take in the views and enjoy some of that famous Italian cuisine.

Juxtaposed amongst the gorgeous Italian architecture, you’ll find three theme parks around the north coast of Lake Garda, so kids will think they’ve died and gone to heaven, especially when they realise Gardaland is also home to Sealife Aquarium. Movieland and Acquasplash Franciacorta are also crowd pleasers with rides, thrills and spills.

As well as hiring boats, pedaloes or kayaks to enjoy the lakes, you can, of course, spend many a happy hour just swimming in them. Kids will love hanging out here, the scenery is unbeatable and there’s always somewhere tempting to sit and recuperate afterwards, ice-cream in hand.

For some culture you can head to Verona, a beautiful city that’s very manageable in terms of scale, and is home to an impressive Colosseum that will fire the imagination and has events running throughout the year.

Along with the café’s and restaurants, playgrounds, campsites and hire facilities, you’ll also find this area packed with medieval castles and Italian top of the range ancient artefacts, perfect for a day out.
