Slovenia Outdoor Activities and Adventures

Take part in a huge army of outdoors activities in and around the Soca River Valley and the surrounding mountains, including walking and hiking, canyoning, mountain-biking, mini-rafting, kayaking and canoeing, white-water rafting and horse-riding. Bovec is Slovenia’s adventure capital, but when you’re exhausted from it all, there are sandy beaches on which to catch your breath.

Lake Bled

Head to sparkling Lake Bled, also beloved for its beaches, paddle-boarding and row-boating. Kids adore throwing themselves into its crystal-clear waters from its wooden jetties.

Radovna Valley

From here venture to the Radovna Valley in the Triglav National Park – the cycling here is incredible, along a flat route rewarding you with staggering views.

Lake Bohinj

Or visit Lake Bohinj, a quieter spot, also with paddle-boarding, a trail round the shoreline and Savica waterfall. You can get here via car-train through the mountains.

Logar Valley

Discover the remote glacial Logar Valley, hiking to see meadows and waterfalls (the best route is up the Strelovec Ridge), tasting traditional cheeses in shepherds’ huts and sampling other local fare in mountain huts and restaurants.

Skocjan Caves

Visit the Skocjan Caves, one of the world's largest known underground canyons, set in the Skocjan Caves Regional Park, with a unique ecosystem due to the microclimactic conditions.

Kocevsko

Discover Kocevsko, whose virgin green forests have a primeval feel in parts. This region is home to the biggest mountain-biking centre in Slovenia, with almost 20km of trails for  beginners and experts. It’s also populated by more than 1,000 wild brown bears (giving it one of the world's highest densities of population) and you can go out spotting them, safely, with a guide. Indeed, this is one of the few areas left on Earth where you can watch brown bears, wolves and lynx in their natural environments.

Ljubljana

Be enchanted by the Slovenian capital Ljubljana with its medieval old quarter, cobbled alleys and SUP hire on the  tree-lined river, letting you paddle under lovely bridges and past pastel-pained baroque churches. One of Europe's greenest capitals, with few cars and a compact centre, Ljubljana is wonderful to amble around, with a mainly early-16th-century castle, the National Museum of Slovenia and the Museum of Modern Art.

Piran

Enjoy Slovenia’s sliver of Adriatic coast. Its main town, Piran out on its peninsula, is like a mini Dubrovnik, with cobblestones, medieval walls, Venetian-style facades, a pretty harbour, a panoramic bell tower and tempting waterfront restaurants.

Predjama

See the world's last cave castle, Predjama, built into a 123m cliff more than 800 years ago, then visit UNESCO-listed Lipica stud farm, with its white Lipizzaner horses best known for their shows in Vienna. Take a tour, meet the horses and watch them train, and perhaps even ride one if you're experienced.
