Family-friendly days out in Birmingham

The second largest city in England, Birmingham is a multi-cultural and vibrant city that has come a long way. Once the powerhouse of English manufacturing, many of its factories have been regenerated into trendy corners of uber-cool shopping and gastronomic delights, making this a city that’s a pleasure to wander around. The city has many canals that are now lined with cafes and restaurants so you could be forgiven for thinking you’re in Venice rather than England.

You’ll find plenty of shopping centres, perfect for some retail therapy; head to the Custard Factory - 15 acres of regenerated factories that are now stacked to the brim with trendy shopping and creative work spaces or try out The Mailbox, where you’ll find plenty of places to eat. This is retail therapy of the highest order in a pleasant environment.

Cadbury World, just south of the city is a perfect treat for the kids (and you), where you can learn the history of cocoa, have a go at making chocolate and try out some chocolate-themed rides. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery has over 40 galleries to amble through. Other museums that make for a great day out include the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter, a time capsule of bygone days showcasing skilled artisans and the British Motor Museum which houses the largest collection of British cars.

If any of your kids are wannabe presenters’ head to the BBC Birmingham Visitor Centre where they can have a go at presenting the news and getting photos taken in the Tardis.

For green space head to Birmingham Wildlife and Conservation Park, a great little zoo close to the city centre or Cannon Hill Park which has a lovely play area and a lake which you can hire a boat to explore. Birmingham Botanical Gardens are an oasis of landscaped gardens and have outdoor theatre in the summer months.
