Expedition cruises are hosted on small ships (think 100-500 passengers, rather than thousands), so they can explore areas huge cruise ships can’t get to – beautiful and remote areas where the emphasis is on adventure, nature and learning.
Onboard experts are on hand to teach you about the spectacular landscapes, plants and animal life you’re seeing, and there are excursions by RIB (inflatable boat) and/or kayak, plus brilliant activities such as glacier walks, snorkelling, bird watching, whale-watching, and meeting members of local communities.
Several expedition ships welcome families, most with a minimum age of eight; we can help you find the right ship and itinerary for you, and tailor-make your trip. We can also advise about dedicated family sailings with onboard kids' programmes packed with activities, both fun and educational.
Some vessels offer cabins sleeping three or four, perfect for families. There may not always be swimming pools or play areas, but there are usually deck and board games, and often there's a hot tub and sauna. Some also have science centres with talks and workshops by researchers, and even the chance to help out with Citizen Science projects monitoring climate change and the like. In short, these trips are very much about families being together – exploring, learning and having fun.
