Though half terms in general are tricky – not long enough to go very far – it's a shame not to take the opportunity to jet off for a spot of winter sun in the last half term of the year, when we’re facing the gloomy prospect of winter.
October is a good time for European family holidays in the likes of Portugal, Tenerife and Turkey, with warmish weather on most Mediterranean beaches (outdoor pools may not be heated though, so think about taking wetsuits).
Slightly further afield but with manageable flights, Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco are good half-term bets as the heat there in high summer be uncomfortable.
You might even think about heading to the South of France or Spain, to a holiday park with a waterpark and other rainy-day facilities.
Or consider a staycation – brave the elements in a UK holiday park or a theme park with its own accommodation, on a British farm-stay, or in a cottage by the sea.
