Solo-Parent Holidays and Breaks

Holidays with kids when travelling as a solo parent.Holidays with kids when travelling as a solo parent.

One-parent holidays need careful planning if they’re to work successfully. They’re a great opportunity to spend quality bonding time with your child or children away from a domestic setting and from daily routines. But while you’re away, you may all also need some time out from what can be an especially intense relationship.

Specialised single-parent holidays can be the answer: mums or dads get to socialise with like-minded people and have some rare adult time, while kids get ready-made playmates – something that’s especially important if you’re travelling with just one child. If your child is sensitive to being surrounded by 2+2 families, this can also be the solution. Organised holidays can also be a way of experiencing more adventurous locations that you might be wary of taking on as a lone parent.

Alternatively, certain types of non-dedicated holidays can be very well-suited to solo-parent travel, either by their nature or because the travel provider offers single-parent discounts and/or particular amenities. Among the former, outdoor activity holidays can work really well for single-parent families.

Tips

• Do your research and book a resort or an organised trip where you are sure there’ll be other kids around your child’s age.

• Consider booking a resort with a kids’ club so you’ll get some time off.

• If you have an ex partner who also holidays with your child, make sure you choose a different kind of trip to mix things up a bit.
