The main UK school holidays are not the best time of year for family holidays in Mauritius, but for a dose of early- or late-summer sun, perhaps with pre-school kids, this super-child-friendly island is ideal – think May, June, September and October. June to August is the best time for surfing in the region.
Bear in mind that the Indian Ocean as a whole may be too hot for younger kids at any time of year and especially in the region’s own summer (Nov–April), although if you're booking a hotel or resort with a kids’ club it will be air conditioned and provide respite from the hottest times of the day.
In the Maldives and the Seychelles, May to September sees the wet season/monsoon, with the highest rainfall in May and October, and a likelihood of rough seas and strong winds. However, given peak-season (Dec–Apr) prices and unpredictable weather over the last few years, you may be tempted to take your chances – if you’re staying in a luxury resort with childcare, as most families do, you’ll have crèches/kids’ clubs to fall back on should rain stop play. On the other hand, you could save your money and seek out some summer sun closer to home!
