You can’t guarantee sunshine in the British summertime – but then you can’t guarantee it anywhere! And there’s such a huge choice of fantastic family-friendly places to stay in the UK that many people wouldn’t think of going anywhere else in the main school holidays.
But on the basis you might well encounter some none-too-friendly weather, it’s worth having contingency plans for rainy days. Often this will be built in to your accommodation choice – part of the attraction of UK holiday parks, holidays villages and campsites is that they have indoor swimming pools and other covered facilities, as do a good number of hotels and resorts. Many also have crèches, kids’ clubs and teenagers’ ‘dens’ providing indoor activities and entertainment when required.
Another popular option is farm-stays, providing fresh air, the chance to go wild in the great outdoors and the opportunity to help with tasks such as milking and egg-collecting – all things that don’t depend on the sun actually making an appearance. Or there’s that great family favourite, cottages – the choice is huge, but finding one with a games room is a wise idea.
And do remember that even when the weather isn’t scorching, you can get badly sunburned in the UK just as you can elsewhere. Take precautions for both your kids and yourself.
