Experience, and create, some of the culinary delights of the family-friendly region of Tuscany of Itlay as well as exploring what the area has to offer those travelling with kids. Sapori & Saperi will create a personalised itinerary for your family, whether for a few days or a week, based in the spectacular Garfagnana area, on the rich plains around the city of Lucca or near the sandy beaches of Versilia. You'll get to the roots of local knowledge passed on by generations of artisans, shepherds, farmers, cheesemakers, bakers, fishermen and beekepers, who are passionate about their food and the land that produces it.

This tailor-made holiday for single parents or couples with kids aged 5+ encourages you to unwind and renew family bonds while gaining new skills you can take home. You and your children can interact with local artisans through hands-on activities and experience how satisfying it is to enjoy yourselves while contributing to the local community – and enjoying a blissfully peaceful stay in a small Tuscan village or on a farm.

Any time to suit your family.

You have a choice of accommodation in the Garfagnana region about 50 minutes north of Lucca (in the mountains), in the area around Lucca or in Versilia (near the sea north of Pisa).

Depending on how many organised activities you want, prices range from €790 to €950 per adult or child for a 4-night adventure and from €1200 to €1400 per adult or child in summer for a 6-night adventure, including accommodation, most meals, local wine or beer, transfers and a friendly Sapori e Saperi guide.

There are loads of different activities at different seasons that can be enjoyed by families of any age. For instance:

Learn to make local Garfagnana potato bread with Paolo, master baker and farro farmer. Visit his farm and get friendly with cows and pigs.

Visit a beekeeper and watch her extract honey from the honeycomb (don’t worry, the bees stay at home in the hive!) and taste the different flavours of honey, such as acacia, wildflower and chestnut, on cheese and locally baked bread.

Learn to make artisan gelato and explore seasonal flavours in on of Italy's best gelateria.

Harvest your own food. Pick wild bilberries (blueberries) and make jam in August. Pick olives and make olive oil in October and November. Harvest heritage wheat with with a sickle in July and make focaccia with the flour. Pick heritage summer fruits and taste the difference. Forage for wild greens in October and November.

Help Ismaele make sausages then BBQ them for dinner.

Feed silkworms and learn to reel fine silk threads from the cocoons.

Mingle with Italian families at one of the many village festivals celebrating the food that makes them unique (for example, a flatbread made only in one village in the mountains, or rosticciana and fagioli—the Garfagnana version of pork ribs and beans).

Ride horses and walk woodland trails.

Help make cheese.

Organize a blind wine-tasting for parents.

Learn traditional crafts from local masters and go home with your own woven basket or hand broom made from sedges and willow ties.

Join Riccardo and his dog Turbo on a truffle hunt. Take your prize truffles back to Riccardo's house and learn to prepare traditional dishes with them.

Paint the mountain scenery, the wildflowers, the sunset…

Get off the ground in a woodland adventure park for children and adults (suspension bridges, rope ladders and other exciting pathways connecting the tree trunks) and eat a picnic ‘tasting’ lunch of delicious local products.

Have a cookery lesson with young Italian mammas — learn to make pasta by hand and lots of other traditional dishes that are easy to make with children at home with the bonus of a healthy meal to enjoy with friends and family.

Develop the confidence to improvise without a recipe using ingredients you have to hand.

Get milk from the ‘mechanical cow’, a refrigerator in a wooden hut that gives unpasturised milk when you press the button. A local dairy farmer fills her up every day.

Keep a journal — in words or pictures — so you can share your adventures with your friends at home.
