Here is an idea of the itinerary included with this trip:
Day 1: On arrival, you will be collected from the airport and taken to your chosen hotel in Funchal. This evening, meet your local guide and enjoy a traditional Madeiran meal at a nearby restaurant.
Day 2: Hop into a jeep for an expedition into the mountainous terrain of the Eastern part of the island. There will be stops to take in the view, a picnic lunch in a laurel forest and then you'll head off on a walk, following one of the island's many Levadas (gently sloping irrigation channels).
Day 3: Today you are free to choose what you do. Perhaps enjoy the hotel's pool or take a dip in the sea; or enjoy some of Funchal's many attractions - for example, take the cablecar up to the botanical gardens, hop on a hair-raising wicker toboggan or explore the colourful market.
Day 4: Grab your sea legs and your swimming costumes for a day on the water. First, you will explore the coastline by kayak., with the chance to snorkel in the clear waters of the Garajau Nature Reserve. Then, later in the day, a RIB will take you out in search of dolphins and whales. Often dolphins will swim alongside the boat, and if so, you may be able to get in and snorkel with them (this does depend on weather conditions. Max. 6 people in the sea at one time).
Day 5: You have a morning free today before being collected from the hotel and kitted out in wet suits and shoes, for an afternoon of canyoning. Your expert guide will lead you down the canyon at the group's pace, with a series of easy slides, pool jumps and rappels (a bit like abseiling). This is a fun way to explore the island's amazing rocky scenery. The min. height for canyoning is 140cm.
Day 6: Today there is another Jeep Expedition, this time to the north of the island. Heading into the mountains, you'll visit the Volcanism Centre and explore volcanic caves and tunnels. Then, after a stop for lunch, you're off to Seixal, where natural lava pools make a unique swimming opportunity, in crystal-clear saltwater.
Day 7: The last activity of the week is mountain biking. Once kitted out with bikes and helmets, you'll take a family-friendly trail, following another wide, gentle Levada; cycling past impressive trees and colourful flora. You then have the afternoon free before joining your guide for a farewell meal in a local restaurant close to your hotel.
Day 8: After breakfast at the hotel, you will be taken back to the airport for your flight home.
Please note: All these activities are included but the days they run may change. The confirmed itinerary for your trip will be issued on arrival in Madeira.
This trip is suitable for children 8 years and older (though canyoning is only suitable for children at least 140cm tall). Younger children can join the holiday but may not be able to participate in all activities.
