An Autumn Break at Forest Holidays, Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire

An expertly-constructed den in Sherwood Forest. An expertly-constructed den in Sherwood Forest.

With autumn just setting in, it was time to reset after a hectic summer and prepare for the new season with all its wet and wild weather. And where better than Sherwood Forest? – famed as the setting for the legendary Robin Hood and the ideal place for mini Robins and Maid Marians to roam the great outdoors.

Forest Holidays’ site is surrounded by 3,300 acres of woodland, and imposing pine trees surround its spacious lodges. The site blends neatly into Sherwood Forest and is also just a 10-minute walk from Sherwood Pines Visitor Centre, which provides a great base for local walking and biking trails (clearly signed), including one trail based on the upcoming film Shaun the Sheep Farmaggedon. Created for a romp around the forest in the dark, it has UV lighting and glow-sticks that make it a fun family adventure.

“A very knowledgeable ranger took us into the woods to educate us on the plant- and wildlife, as well as getting us to build a den and start a (controlled!) fire.”

It was pretty wet for much of our stay, but in true British style we donned our wellies and raincoats and explored the area on foot and two wheels. Bike hire at the visitor centre was well worth the small additional cost – we recommend it if you don’t take your own bikes, as the best way of seeing the forest.

On the day were booked onto a Forest Discovery activity day, we lucked out with magnificent sunshine. For a small fee (we do recommend you pre-book), we were greeted by a very knowledgeable ranger who took us into the woods to educate us on the plant- and wildlife, as well as getting us to build a den and start a (controlled!) fire. We had a ball doing this activity – it was a real chance to relive some fabulous childhood memories for adults, while children are forging their own. On later walks around the Forest Holiday woodlands, we came across numerous well-built dens inspired by the rangers.

Who knew that living the basic life in the forest could trigger so much imagination? This place really does take you back to nature and is the perfect place to relax, unwind and reconnect with one another and with nature.

The lodges are far from basic, though – each one is a little slice of luxury. As an added treat, we booked the in-cabin entertainment package so we could settle down to a good film in the evenings after a day in the fresh air. Meanwhile, the wood-burning stove and outdoor private hot tub proved even bigger hits on those chilly autumnal nights…
