An Easter Family Holiday at the Aphrodite Hills Holiday Residences, Cyprus

A collection of luxury apartments and super-luxurious villas on an award-winning resort in south-west Cyprus, the Aphrodite Hills Holiday Residences are just 20 minutes from the city of Paphos and 10 minutes from Paphos International Airport, making it a breeze, if like us, you arrive on a late flight. Despite the hour, resort security were also on hand to check us in quickly and easily, and to show us around our villa, where a welcome pack of food (which differs by villa) was much appreciated.

The lovely modern villa was superbly located, within walking distance of the Village Square (the hub of the resort) and with a gorgeous view over the golf course. It was fully equipped with all the facilities you'd expect of any high-end rental, including a dishwasher and a washing machine. Our private pool was heated, which is optional but highly recommended at this time of year. The kids loved it; they didn't use the kids' club pool, which wasn’t heated (worth bearing in mind if you're going outside peak summer times).

"One of the highlights of our holiday was bringing home
barbecue fare for a feast outside by our very own pool
– the stuff memories are made of!"

The largest villas are the other side of the ravine. Some of these are vast, with infinity pools and stunning decor. But most guests prefer, as we did, to be within walking distance of the hub. [Note: we can request your favourite villa location at the time of booking].

This resort caters for a variety of budgets. The most inexpensive option is the apartments, but they are lovely too – modern and spacious. And you can book two next door to each other, so have your own space while having access to the same communal pool – a very appealing concept for groups of families.

Between us, we tried out the resort’s excellent facilities. My eldest children did the Golf Academy, with lessons in swing and putting. The coaches were brilliant – skilled at teaching different standards and at picking up mistakes in technique quickly.

The girls also had a private tennis lesson. I knew my teenager would be okay, but my youngest had never hit a ball before. Again, the coaching was excellent. I never thought my four year old would be hitting a ball over the net by the end of a lesson. The tennis facilities are brilliant, comprising eights courts of various ground types.

The girls also tried out the private horse-riding lessons. We were collected by the Aphrodite Hills riding club for the 10-minute drive – a service offered to Holiday Residences guests without car hire. The cleanliness and facilities were good; you can tell the horses are well looked after. The girls, both of different standards, had great tuition and lots of fun. [Note: Take the Family can sort out your riding reservation at the time of booking].

We had trouble prising our youngest away from our lovely warm pool to go to the kids’ club in Village Square, with its local friendly staff, but she did enjoy it, coming home with various Easter creations. Meanwhile, I took the opportunity to head for the calm spa with her older sister for an excellent side-by-side mother-and-daughter facial and pedicure. [Note: the spa gets very booked up but we can also reserve this in advance for you.]

For clients staying at the Residence, there's a free shuttle bus to the beach hourly every day from late April until October, with each property getting a free one day-pass to the Beach Club each week. Village Square also has some cheap hire bikes for adults and kids, as well as Segways to rent out for an hour at a time, which my teens loved.

If you don’t hire a car, a bus stop opposite the hotel (in the Golf Club parking) takes you to Paphos’ central bus station for €1.50pp each way. Paphos is a wonderful place to go to if you want to venture out and about, with ancient Greek ruins on archaeological sites and lots of restaurants with gorgeous harbour views, all reasonably priced. The lively Aphrodite Water Park is also close by and can be pre-booked for a day out.

I do recommend car hire, though, not least for shopping. It’s 10 minutes to Pissouri, where there’s a large supermarket with a great choice of local and international brands at reasonable prices (although there is also a smaller in-resort supermarket with a bakery, which is good for ‘topping up’). One of the highlights of our holiday was bringing home barbecue fare for a feast outside by our very own pool – the stuff memories are made of!
