A Family Beach Holiday at the Peligoni Club, Zakynthos

‘When can we go back to Peligoni?’ demand my teenage daughters on a weekly basis. When, they wonder, can they return to a blissful world of milkshakes, boys, sunbathing, kayaking, dancing, swimming, eating and hanging out on the pontoon in the warm, turquoise Greek sea?

‘Soon’, I promise. ‘Soon.’

The Peligoni Club, for those yet to taste its glories, is an oasis of sophistication, fun and luxury on lovely Zakynthos – an exclusive beach club with villa and B&B accommodation scattered in the hills nearby.

Our villa, Askalia, about 10 minutes’ drive away in the hills, had its own pool, table tennis table and stunning sea views. But once we’d tasted the delights of the Club itself, there was no turning back. From complimentary drinks on arrival to a wonderful afternoon cruise on a private yacht, everything about this private club by the sea was spot on. Most importantly, it has the unique ability to satisfy the varied needs of many age groups.

We were a group of 17 – three families with children aged between 10 and 17, with different demands, interests and hopes for our week in the sun. But the one thing we all loved was the Peligoni Club. The kids and teens got wristbands (with or without signing privileges) so they could grab an ice cream or a San Pellegrino at will. We knew where they were by the slurping of ice-cold milkshakes and the occasional crack of another can of ice-cold soft drink.

This is what parents can enjoy at Peligoni – freedom. Your kids are whisked away to the kids’ club run by Sharky & George, or can whisk themselves away to the aforementioned pontoon, where girls lounge and boys wrestle for attention. Meanwhile you – poor, tired, stressed parent – can relax. Yes, relax. You can find a big, soft sunbed and actually read a book without worrying about your offspring, who’ll be off kayaking, paddleboarding, diving off the pontoon, chilling by the bar, chilling by the pool, or just chilling.

You might meet up for lunch, when they’ll grab a delicious, freshly made pizza from the wood-fired oven. But they’ll be off soon enough, leaving you free to sip chilled rosé or a beer with old or new friends and finish off with a double espresso before heading back to your book once more.

You might glimpse them after dinner in the evening. But chances are they’ll be out dancing with friends, to be dropped off later by the complimentary Club shuttle back to your villa.

The Peligoni is a great spot for teenagers to get an early taste of fun and freedom. If you crave 100% authentic Greek experience, it may not be for you, but if you like the sound of a Soho House-by-sea, you’ll love it too.

Think top-class food, drink and entertainment in the sun. And I mean top-class. One afternoon we found ourselves enjoying home-made salads, quiches and melt-in-the-mouth orange drizzle cake aboard the Club’s private yacht. The incredible young lady who was looking after us said: “Nothing says camping like a home-made quiche.”

My wife looked at me, no doubt remembering our own camping cuisine: black-burnt sausages and mud-covered sliced white bread.

But that’s Peligoni. Everything is just right. From the setting itself to the fact that the same catering team will even come and cook for you up at your villa, it’s a week of pure escapism from the trials and tribulations of normal life. Every last detail has been thought about. The atmosphere is hugely relaxed. The food is delicious. But if you do crave a taste of a more authentic Greece, you can walk 500m to a stunning local restaurant – or kayak round, like our kids did.

That said, the Peligoni’s Greek salad is pretty good too. And they’ll bring it to your sun-lounger.

Access to the Peligoni Club is exclusive to guests who book accommodation through them, with memberships sold on a weekly basis or for the entire length of stay. Having membership to the Club gives you use of and access to all the land-based facilities, events, activities and services, some at extra charge. Read more about the Peligoni Club.
