A Family Break at the Premier Inn Greenwich, London
In the annual TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards, Premier Inn usually score brilliantly in the top family hotels category, with many of its London hotels featuring among the 20 most child-friendly properties around the UK. And in a city where hotel prices can be truly breathtaking, or at least eyebrow-raising even at the no-frills end of the spectrum, there are many reasons to consider this budget option when visiting London with kids.
Uppermost in our mind on our last stay in the British capital was location – and the Premier Inn Greenwich is brilliant for those visiting the many fantastic sights of maritime Greenwich. On this visit, we were seeing a piece of interactive theatre at the National Maritime Museum, a 10-minute stroll from the hotel. We also watched a space show at the Royal Observatory and spent time exploring Greenwich Park itself. Our great find of the weekend was right by the hotel – the Big Red Pizza Bus, serving Italian food in an atmospheric converted double-decker with a covered terrace and fairylights.
"If you just want a base for sightseeing on a family city break, you can’t go wrong with this reliable chain, but Premier Inns are also brilliant for airport stopovers with kids, if you’re flying out early or arriving late. At such times, having something that you can count on and are familiar with is much more important than either novelty or luxury."
Our family room had a double bed and two pull-outs, all of which, as my three sons agreed, were extremely comfortable. The level of cleanliness was, as usual, exemplary, and we were especially impressed by the breakfast (a buffet of cooked and Continental items) – we’ve never had one as good in a budget hotel. Another bonus is that if breakfast is not included in your room rate, it's free for two kids under 16 with every adult. The same colourful dining room, Thyme, also offers global dining including a kids’ menu featuring the likes of spinach and ricotta lasagne and chili con carne.
Would we stay in a Premier Inn again? The answer is that we don’t think we’ll be able not to! If you just want a base for sightseeing on a family city break, you can’t go wrong with this reliable chain, but Premier Inns are also brilliant for airport stopovers with kids, if you’re flying out early or arriving late. At such times, having something that you can count on and are familiar with is much more important than either novelty or luxury.
